It shouldn’t be that hard. In our quest to find the perfect mold, we tested many  prototypes that promised the world… and simply did not deliver.

We took our Frozen Balls for many a roadtest. Here are our findings:

 

1. You want a big ball.

We like a drink. On ice. We hate dilution.

The rate at which a frozen ice sphere melts depends on various factors, including the surrounding temperature, humidity, and air circulation. Additionally, the material and conditions of the surface on which the ice sphere is placed can also influence the melting process.

In a controlled environment, assuming room temperature (around 20°C or 68°F) and average humidity, a 6cm diameter ice sphere will take anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour to melt completely.

2. It needs to be easy to fill.

We tested these bad boys out with our husbands. Our kids. Our Grandmothers.

You simply fill the Frozen Ball mold  under a tap until you reach the line. Don’t go crazy with the water pressure. Slow and steady wins the race. The line allows for the walkability to the freezer without spillage, and also the fact that water expands when it freezes.

Water is unique in that it expands when it freezes, unlike most substances that contract. The expansion of water during freezing is due to the formation of a crystalline structure in ice. The increase in volume is approximately 9% from the liquid to the solid state.

Our molds allow for that 9% increase. And the path from the sink to the freezer. Even our husbands could do it.

3. No more TETRIS in the freezer

We have all played TETRIS in the freezer. Especially with ice cube trays. Frozen Balls don’t spill. They don’t require a level playing field.  You can stack them. If you are fancy and you have a freezer with drawers, we are jealous, but they fit in drawers too. You no longer need to balance your ice tray on the frozen peas.

4. It needs to be easy to get your balls out.

Not rocket science, we agree. But we sampled a lot of prototypes. Many of them froze closed so we couldn’t open them. Some of them needed a sharp object and raised significant WHS issues. Some had leaked in the freezer, rendering them semi-balls. Disappointing.

Our Frozen Balls are full and plump.

The warmth of a loving hand is all you need to pop your ball into the glass. Enough said.
